हरियाली तीज

6/28/2022 1:59:00 PM

It can be a simple legal convention or can be part of a ritual, as practiced by many societies. In Hinduism coming of age generally signifies that a boy or girl is mature enough to understand his responsibility towards family and society. In South India Coming of age ceremony or rites of passage (Langa Voni Telugu: లంగా వోని), is celebrated when a girl reaches 9, 11 or 13 years (Odd years). GuruPornima

6/30/2017 6:47:00 AM

The full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August) is observed as the auspicious day of Guru Purnima, a day sacred to the memory of the great sage Maharshi Veda Vyasa. All Hindus are indebted to this ancient saint who edited the four Vedas, wrote the 18 Puranas, Mahabharata, and the Srimad Bhagavatam. Vyasa even taught Dattatreya, who is regarded as the Guru of Gurus. On this day, all spiritual aspirants and devotees worship Vyasa in honor of his divine personage and all disciples perform a 'puja' of their respective spiritual preceptor or 'Gurudevs'.  The period 'Chaturmas' ("four months") begins from this day. In the past, wandering spiritual masters and their disciples used to settle down at a place to study and discourse on the Brahma Sutras composed by Vyasa, and engage themselves in Vedantic discussions.  This day is very important for the students and the teachers (both spiritual and academic). Hindus dedicate this day to Sage Vyasa.

Ramadan

5/18/2017 12:35:00 PM

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim year, when Muslims do not eat between the rising and setting of the sun. During Ramadan, Muslims celebrate the fact that it was in this month that God first revealed the words of the Quran to Mohammed. The month-long fast involves abstinence from food, liquids, smoking,  between the hours of sunrise and sunset, but at night the holiday has turned into a feast in many Arab countries, each of which has its favorite special Ramadan foods and recipes. Moreover, fasting must be undertaken with spiritual intent (niyyah ),  and this intent must be renewed each day before dawn. Mean-spirited words, and thoughts and deeds such as slander, lying, and covetousness negate the value of fasting. The fast commences each day at dawn, immediately prior to which an early morning meal, suhoor, should be eaten.  It usually includes a special bread called mushtah and a sweet cream-filled pastry called kilaj, which are served only during Ramada

Easter Sunday

4/14/2017 6:34:00 AM

Easter Sunday is a happy day for Christians because they believe that Jesus rose from the dead on this day. They believe that Jesus' resurrection or coming alive shows that death is not the end of everything. Many go to church to thank God for Jesus' life. Church bells are rung and churches are decorated with flowers such as white lilies which are associated with Easter. The colours in the church change to white or gold which are thought to be the best colours. There are many customs associated with Easter Day which involve eggs. For this reason Easter Day used to be known as Egg Sunday. For the last two hundred years in Britain the custom of giving children chocolate eggs has been popular while in Europe and America parents hide chocolate eggs in the garden for children to find. In many countries children are given hard boiled eggs and it is also a custom for children to decorate these by painting or dyeing them in bright colours. Eggs were always thought to be special even

Babasaheb Ambedkar

Bhimrao Ambedkar was born to Bhimabai and Ramji on 14 April 1891 in Mhow Army Cantonment, Central Provinces (Madhya Pradesh). Ambedkar’s father was a Subedar in the Indian Army and after his retirement in 1894, the family moved to Satara, also in Central Provinces. Shortly after this, Bhimrao’s mother passed away. Four years later, his father remarried and the family shifted to Bombay. In 1906, 15 year old Bhimrao married Ramabai, a 9 year old girl. His father Ramji Sakpal died in Bombay, in 1912. Throughout his childhood, Ambedkar faced the stigmas of caste discrimination. Hailing from the Hindu Mahar caste, his family was viewed as “untouchable” by the upper classes. The discrimination and humiliation haunted Ambedkar at the Army school. Fearing social outcry, the teachers would segregate the students of lower class from that of Brahmins and other upper classes. The untouchable students were often asked by the teacher to sit outside the class. After shi

4/12/2017 7:51:00 AM

Good Friday Good Friday, also known as "Holy Friday," is the Friday immediately preceding Easter Sunday. It is celebrated traditionally as the day on which Jesus was crucified. The liturgical calendar of the Christians is marked with the four special days of the Easter Week - the Holy Thursday, the Good Friday, the Holy Saturday, and ending with the celebrations on Easter Sunday. Many Christian churches celebrate Good Friday with a subdued service, usually in the evening, in which Christ’s death is remembered with solemn hymns, prayers of thanksgiving, a message centered on Christ’s suffering for our sakes, and observance of the Lord’s Supper. Good Friday is observed by the followers of Jesus Christ to recall the sufferings and sacrifices of the central figure of Christianity. The day includes activities of thanksgiving, or repentance. The passion of the Lord is celebrated on this day by offering prayers and services. The holy water fronts in

It celebrates the birth of Saint Mahavir. The importance of the festival owes to the fact that Saint Mahavir was the founder of Jainism as a religion. It is a peaceful religion that cherishes simplicity. Their core values are such that they do not believe in killing even an insect. Demise of my favorite language(dialect).. Whose fault is it, who is to blame for it, when you see your favorite language slowly imploding by itself, How can a popular dialect can be doomed to die, when there are millions of speakers all over the world watching it slide. Bhojpuri was my mother lanuage or dialect, when I was born, I spoke it fluently as a little kid in and out of my home, When I went to my school, no one was speaking bhojpuri, even the bhojpuri kids were speaking in Hindi. What happened, some one told me, it is " lath mar" langauge, It is backward, does not have scripts or written language, There are no books, magazines, or journals in it, How can you call it a language, when there is no literature in it. I rested my case, talked to my parents and siblings in Bhojpuri at home, Sooner or later we all had our families, we were speaking Hindi or English, When kids saw us speaking in Bhojpuri, they could not figure out what it is, The youtube v

an odd color leaf ..   While looking at these colorful yellow-orange-red fall leaves circling to the ground, I wonder why trees are exactly opposite of human beings.. first of all, trees give away something every day which they need everyday for living.. think of oxygen ! that is so "un-human" :)  And now the winter is close, trees are ready with colorful leafy summer clothes !.. Some have already started shedding those..  are they heading to the beach ? Surely you too need a break after working hard over summer on your job of creating shades for tired humans .. but don't you feel cold for the beach ?  Are you aware of those green guys among you ? Still green in color and green at heart, staring secretly at these colorful beauties around ? :) Trees bend as the wind blows and humans always oppose and prove their point.. and that's why trees are “always there” for us, not like human beings who "change

The next morning is celebrated as Rangwali Holi - a free-for-all carnival of colours,[9] where participants play, chase and colour each other with dry powder and coloured water, with some carrying water guns and coloured water-filled balloons for their water fight. Anyone and everyone is fair game, friend or stranger, rich or poor, man or woman, children and elders. The frolic and fight with colours occurs in the open streets, open parks, outside temples and buildings. Groups carry drums and other musical instruments, go from place to place, sing and dance. Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day Valentine's Day celebrations did not catch on in India until around 1992. It was spread due to the programs in commercial TV channels, such as MTV, dedicated radio programs and love letter competitions, in addition to an economical liberalization that allowed the explosion of the valentine card industry. Economic liberalization also helped the Valentine card industry. The celebration has caused a sharp change on how people have been displaying their affection in public since the Middle Ages. India is well known as a culture filled with ancient traditions. The Hindu culture contradicts many of the western world’s ideals. Valentine’s Day celebrations are known to clash with India’s conservative religious background. It has only been in the most recent years that Valentine’s Day has become widely recognized in India. Just like most people in the world, many men and women of India, particularly young couples, celebrate Valentine’s Day i

There are several legends about the festival Thaipusam. Here are a few of them There was a demon named Tharakasuran who gave a lot of trouble to the rishis and saints. Lord Muruga was called by his parents Lord Shiva and Parvati and given the job of destroying the Asuran. Lord Muruga set off with the blessings of his parents to destroy the demon. He took with him twelve weapons, eleven of which were given by his father Lord Shiva and the 'Vel' given by his mother Parvati. Mundan

Mundan There are many customs and traditions which are prevalent since times immemorial. Specifically in the Hindu culture there is a long list of ceremonies which begin with birth right upto the last rites of the person thus covering this entire journey from being born to being dissolved in the panchmahabhutas. One such ceremony is the mundan ceremony. What Is Mundan Ceremony? The mundan ceremony is also called chudakarana and basically it represents the first time shaving of the baby hair after the child is born. It is said that one cannot do the shaving of baby hair in any random year. Though it could be carried out in the latter years also but experts suggest that it is better done in the first year itself. There is also a logic behind it that if the first time shaving is done early, it would lead to better hair growth of the baby as he or she grows up. Symbolically the carrying out of the mundan ceremony or the first time shaving of baby hair signifies that the undesirab

It is a four- day long festival that falls in the month of 'Thai'( January- February) every year and marks the auspicious beginning of Uttarayan - the sun's journey northwards for a six-month period. The festival gets its name from a Tamil word which means 'to boil' and is held during the season when rice, cereals, sugar-cane and turmeric are harvested. 'Ponga' literally means overflowing and is named so because of the tradition of cooking the new rice in pots until they overflow, which is symbolic of abundance and prosperity. Chhath Puja

.. अर्चना अनुप्रिया।

Jawaharlal Nehru (Speech 1947).

Jawaharlal Nehru (Speech on Indian Independence Day, 1947). The day when India woke up to freedom back in 1947 was a day of great celebration. A country got rid of her foreign yoke and became a sovereign nation, she celebrated her sovereignty on this day - the triumph of numerous martyred souls. It was a day of fulfillment, it was the day of a new beginning, a birth of a nation. On the stroke of midnight, a country came into life again as the british handed over the governance of India to the Indian leaders. The long and difficult struggle had borne fruit at last, though the happiness was marred by the fact that the country was divided into India and Pakistan and the violent communal riots had left the countries permanently scarred. That was the price that India paid for her dearly bought freedom. The british government declared the country independent and left for their own shores. On the 15th of August, 1947, India became completely independent. It was on this histori

Independence Day of India (15th August)

8/12/2010 2:40:00 AM

India got its independence from the clutches of British rule on 15th August 1947. It was this day when India’s tricolor flag was unfolded by Pandit Nehru on the barricades of the Red Fort at Delhi. Each and every patriotic soul watched with excitement and paid tribute to thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom. The Independence Day of India is a moment of delight and grandeur but to achieve it the nation had to put up a long battle for over two centuries against the British Empire. At last on 3rd June 1947, the last British Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten of Burma, declared the separation of the British Empire in India into India and Pakistan. The announcement was made under the terms of the Indian Independence Act 1947. Significance of Independence Day The significance of the Independence Day in the existence of a nation is of greater value. The day is much more than merely celebrating the anniversary of India’s free

Graduation Day Driving slowly, watching the headlights in the rain. Funny how things change. Think of the good times wishing you were still with me. The way it used to be, graduation day. Watching the stars fall, a million dreams have all gone bad. Think of all we had. I knew all then, thought you loved me I was wrong. Life goes on, graduation day, oh, graduation day. Thinking of a time when everything was right. Thinking of a time with only you and I. Makes me sorry that it had to end that way. Learned my lesson now there's nothing left to say, graduation day, oh graduation day. Thinking of a time when everything was right. Thinking of a time with only you and I. Makes me sorry that it had to end that way. Learned my lesson now there's nothing left to say, graduation day, oh graduation day. Oh graduation day. He was completely ignorant of what miseries and sorrows were all about. He did not know the tragedies of everyday life. One day the prince desired to see the city. The King ordered that the city should be all gay and grand, so that everywhere his son would meet with only pleasing sights. Teachings of Jesus

3/23/2010 11:13:00 PM

Jesus Christ’s teachings are highly revered by people of all communities. Christ has taught people how to live godly lives. As he traveled around Israel, Jesus taught with sermons and parables (a short story with a spiritual meaning). Jesus delivered his most famous sermon on a mountain. In it, Jesus taught his listeners to: • Love your enemies. • Do not judge others. • Trust God. • Don't be anxious about tomorrow. • Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (The "golden rule"). A popular parable of Jesus is about two builders. One was wise, and the other was foolish. The Wiseman built his house upon a rock; the foolish built his house on sand. When a storm came, the wise man's house stood, but the foolish man's house fell. The significance of the story is that whoever obeys Jesus is like the wise man. Whoever disobeys his words is like the foolish man. Jesus ta

Holi

2/13/2010 10:58:00 PM

History of Holi Holi is an ancient festival of India and was originally known as 'Holika'. The festivals finds a detailed description in early religious works such as Jaimini's Purvamimamsa-Sutras and Kathaka-Grhya-Sutras. Historians also believe that Holi was celebrated by all Aryans but more so in the Eastern part of India. It is said that Holi existed several centuries before Christ.
