Guru Purnima: marks the significance of Guru

Saturday, June 23, 2012 | 1:45:00 AM

Guru Purnima is celebrated to honour the Guru. It is jointly celebrated by the Hindus and Buddhists. It is observed on full moon also known as Purnima in the moth of May or June.Guru Purnima is celebrated by spiritual organizations all over India.Guru Purnima also known as Vyas Purnima.

The Buddhists celebrate it to commemorate Lord Buddha who gave His first sermon on this day at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Hindus celebrate it to remember the great story teller Vyasa who is also a most popular name in Guru-shishya tradition.

‘Guru’ in India, holds a supreme significance. The word “Guru” in Sanskrit is translated as “dispeller of darkness.”Guru forces the darkness of ignorance to go away and leads seekers on the path to enlightenment. He teaches us, he guides us, he protects us from all sorts of dangers and sins.

A real Guru not only points the direction to the goal but takes the consciousness of the surrendered disciple into his consciousness and makes the inflow of the Higher into the lower continuously, till the three consciousness of the Isvara, the Guru and the Atman of the disciple become one undifferentiated whole. (Extract from the preface of Prabodhasudhakara published by Samata Books.)Ramakrishna Paramahamsa says about true guru like this "He alone is the true teacher who is illumined by the light of true knowledge."It is very hard to find a true and real Guru in the modern day so be careful.Any person or incident that removes darkness and fills with light is a Guru.

On this special day all the diciple express their gratitude to their teachers. It is the best time to receive the grace of the guru.Guru Poornima is also considered an
especially beneficial day to practice yogic sadhana and meditation.Disciples offer flowers and sweets to their ‘Gurus’ on this day.
