Hartalika Teej is a well-known Hindu festival for ladies that is observed on the third day of the bright half of the North Indian Lunar month of Bhadrapada or Bhadrapud. The word “Hartalika” is an amalgamation of two words "harit" and "aalika" which implies "abduction" and "female friend" separately. The story goes like this with this Teej that Goddess Parvathi incarnated on the Earth as the daughter of Himalayas and called as Shailaputri. Her father has given a promise for her to have an arranged marriage with Lord Vishnu without her consent. This was not liked by Shailaputri as she had her heart beating for Lord Shiva. She expressed about this absurd situation to her female friend who, took Shailaputri to a very thick forest, signifying an action of abduction from her friend who happened to be a female and hence, the name - 'Hartalika' comes to our picture! Upon reaching the forest, Shailaputri or Goddess Parvathi chooses the third day of the bright half of Bhadrapud to make a Shiv ling out of her hair and starts to pray the idol. Lord Shiva on listening and observing to Parvathi’s prayers gets highly mesmerised and promises her that he will be her husband. And, they did marry along with the blessings from Shailaputri's father, Himalaya at last! Thereafter, the event is celebrated till today as Hartalika Teej for it was the abduction of Parvathi by her female friend that made all this possible for Goddess Parvathi to meet and marry her life-partner, Lord Shiva.

During this festival women take up fast in the evening of Hartalika Teej while worshiping to Goddess Parvathi and Lord Shiva and recollecting their wedding and they, also keep up all night listening and chanting prayers. The fast that is also called nishivasar nirjala vrat, commences during the evening of Hartalika Teej and is broken the next day after a full day's adherence which involves women not even drinking water.

The regions where Hartalika Teej is celebrated are in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.
