Baisakhi

                Baisakhi depicts the harvest festival of the Punjabi region. It is also known as Vaisakhi. Punjabi community people consider this as the beginning of the Punjabi new year. Baisakhi is celebrated every year on 13^th April.

          The festival is especially important for the Sikh community as it marks the establishment of the Khalsa which is also termed Khalsa Sirjana Divas. This day is also observed as a thanksgiving day by farmers in Punjab whereby farmers pay their tribute, thanking God for the abundant harvest and also praying for future prosperity.Hence it is also known as harvest festival.

Celebration:

          The main celebration takes place at Talwandi Sabo where Guru Gobind Singh stayed for nine months and completed the recompilation of the Guru Granth Sahib and also established Khalsa there.People celebrate Baisakhi in following ways:

1.  1..Aawat pauni: Aawati pauni means people come together to harvest the wheat while other people play drums at the same time. At the end of the day, people sing dohay to the tunes of the drum.

2.    2.Bhangra: People celebrate baisakhi by performing folk dance called Bhangra which traditionaly is a harvest dance.

3.    Fairs: Fairs(mela) are held in may places in Punjab villages.

4.    3.Parade: People organize parades and processions in many parts of India. These parades are not only taken out in India but also in USA, UK and Canada by Punjabi community people.

5.    4.Gurudwara: People visit gurudwara early in the morning and offer flowers and express their gratitude towards God.

6.    5.Kirtan: Full day kirtans(spiritual songs) are held in almost all gurudwaras and people participate in this.
